Studio growth can mean many different things:
Enrollment
Staff
Profits
Sometimes, as studio owners, we are feeling really stuck and getting distracted by tasks that don't actually happen. Our to-do list is never-ending and so long we could never get to it all.
Mistake #1: Take the time to really focus on tasks that make you happy, bring you joy, and help you get to your ultimate goal.
I had a client that kept saying she was overwhelmed by her to-do list. When we took a deep dive into her to-do list, we found two aha moments: (1) there were things on her list that didn’t need to be done at all, and (2) there were things on her list she could delegate to others and she shouldn’t be doing herself because they didn’t help her to get to her big goal. Anything that doesn’t align with your big goals are a distraction.
Ask yourself:
Is this a task that's revenue-generating?
Is this a task that is in alignment with my big goals or is this in the other category?
Is this something that I need to actually be doing?
Is this something that I could delegate to somebody else?
Mistake #2: You are the bottleneck in your systems.
You are creating a bottleneck in your system when you get distracted and start taking on tasks that are someone else’s tasks in your organization because they’re easy for you to whip out real quick and check a box. This feeds your ego because you’re telling yourself you’re getting all this stuff done, and you’re being productive. But you're actually putting off the things that matter because they feel hard or they're uncomfortable. You are doing all the other things to delay the harder work. What you really need to do is do the hard thing first. You create bottlenecks in your studio by not delegating.
If you are a Type A personality and like things to be done a certain way, sometimes handing it off is your biggest bottleneck. You have to be willing to let go of some of the control and the process and keep the outcome the same.
Mistake #3: Doing Everything D.I.Y. Style
We are good at a lot of things. We can be the jack of all trades and master of none. Here's what happens when we try to D. I. Y. and we're trying to Google and YouTube our way through things. It may work for a little while. What happens is you end up spending so much time trying to learn the thing and doing it yourself it actually costs you more money in the long run than just hiring someone to support you from the start.
One of the things that I've learned over the years of doing all of this is that if you find the right support and the right people to help you, you will see a return on your investment. For example, if you pour in even 10 hours of your precious time trying to build a website, do you know how much money you gave up? You could have gone out there and made money in that 10 hours of your time, then trying to figure this out on your own and getting frustrated and giving up to only end up where you should have started in the first place.
Get the support that you need. It will allow you to move forward faster on your quickest path to get to your goals.
